Getting started

What is Handover?

Handover is the household handbook. You write down how your home runs: the bills, the insurance, the house, the papers and who to call. Then your partner, your children or someone else you trust can find it if one of you falls ill, is away or dies.

Where do I get the app, and what does it cost?

Handover is for Android phones, from Google Play. It is free to use, and there are no ads.

How do I sign in?

You type your email, and we send you a 6-digit code. You type that into the app. There is no password to remember. If you can't find the email, look in your spam folder, or tap "Send a new code".

What happens the first time I open the app?

The app briefly shows what it does, and then you sign in. You type your first name and a name for the household, for example The Smiths. If you answer a few questions about your household, the app shows the topics that fit you. Then it takes the questions one at a time. You can take a break whenever you like. Everything is saved as you go.

Can we have both our home and the holiday home?

Yes. Under Household, tap "New household" and choose whether it is your home or a holiday home. A holiday home gets its own topics, such as the season, renting it out and sharing the house with other families. You switch between households under Household. More about Handover for holiday homes.

Can I make the text bigger?

Yes. Under Settings › Text size you can choose Small, Normal, Large or Largest. You can also choose the app's language there, Danish or English. Each person in the household chooses their own.

The handbook

How do I write something down?

On the Overview, the topics are under "Your handbook", for example Money and bills, The home and People to call. Tap a topic and then a question. Write the answer and tap "Save". To change it later, tap "Edit". You can also write step by step, add a link or a picture. To find something, tap "Search the handbook" at the top of the Overview.

What if a question doesn't fit us?

Tap "Not relevant for us" at the bottom of the question. Then it no longer counts as missing. If a whole topic doesn't fit, you can remove it. What you have written is kept, and you can bring the topic back under "Add a topic".

Can I write down something there is no question about?

Yes. At the bottom of each topic, tap "Add something else" and write your own note. Under "More questions" there are more suggestions. If a whole topic is missing, like the boat or the garden, tap "Add a topic" and "Make your own topic".

We have two cars. How do I write about both?

Hold your finger on the small pencil by "Your handbook" for a moment. Then tap the topic The car and choose "Have two? Add another". The new one gets the same questions but its own answers. If one question needs two answers, open the answer, tap "More options" and "Add another answer".

Why can't I write the code in the handbook?

PIN codes, passwords, card numbers and CPR numbers don't belong in ordinary text. If something looks like a code, the app asks you to write where it is kept instead of the code itself. Codes are kept safely in a sealed envelope, and from the handbook you can link to the code.

Can I add pictures?

Yes, up to 5 pictures on each entry, for example of the fuse box or the water tap. Don't take pictures of passwords, PIN codes, bank cards or health cards.

Can the children be in the handbook without an account?

Yes. Under Household, tap "Add a child or someone else without an account". It is just a name in the handbook, and the person can't see anything. Then you can say who an answer is about, like Emil's passport, and see everything about Emil together under People on the Overview.

Does the app work without the internet?

Yes. The handbook is also kept on the phone, so you can read and write without a connection. What you write is shared with the rest of the household when the phone is online again.

Sharing with others

How do I invite someone to the handbook?

Go to Household and tap "Invite someone". Type the person's name, choose what they may do and which topics they may see. You can send the invitation by email, as a message, or show a QR code if you are sitting together. The invitation code works for 30 days. Under "How long?" you can also give access for a period, for example while someone looks after the house. It then ends by itself.

What can the different people in the household do?

The owner started the handbook and sees and can change everything. A partner also sees and can change everything, and can invite others. Family see the topics you choose and can write in them. A trusted person sees the topics you choose but can't change anything, for example a friend or a lawyer. You can always change this with "Change role" under Household.

I have been invited. What do I do?

Tap the link in the message. If you don't have the app, get it from Google Play, tap "I have been invited" and sign in with your email. The invitation code has 6 letters and numbers. Often it is filled in for you.

What is a guest page?

A guest page is for someone who borrows the house or the car for a while. You choose what goes on it, for example the heating, the rubbish and who to call. The guest needs no app and no account: they get a link by text message or email, or a sheet you can print. The page closes by itself after the last day. You find it under Household › Lend for a while. Guest pages are made by the household's owner or partner. Codes can come along, but only from Shared codes, such as the Wi-Fi and the key box, and the page then gets a 4-digit code that you send separately.

How do I remove someone, or leave the household?

Under Household, the owner and partners can tap "Remove from the household" by a person. What the person wrote stays in the handbook, and they get an email about it. To leave yourself, tap "Leave the household". If you own the household, one of the others takes over.

Codes and envelopes

What is a sealed envelope?

It is the place for codes and logins, such as the phone's PIN, the alarm and the safe. The codes are locked on the phone before they are sent (end-to-end encrypted). Only your phone and the phones you confirm can read them. Neither we nor anyone else with access to the server can open the envelope.

What are Shared codes?

Shared codes are the everyday codes in one place: the Wi-Fi, the alarm, the key box and the door codes. The owner, partners and family can open them right away. A trusted person can't. The household's owner or a partner sets them up. Online banking and your own logins belong in your own envelope.

Who can open my envelope, and when?

You decide for each person: right away, after a waiting period, or no access. The waiting period can be 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks or 1 month. If someone asks to open the envelope, you are told at once by email and in the app, and you can tap "Say no". If you don't say no before the waiting period is over, the envelope opens for them. So nobody can open it behind your back, but the right people get in if you can't answer yourself.

What is the printed key?

When you set up your envelope, you print a sheet with its key. Keep it somewhere safe, for example with the will, and not with the phone. With the sheet, the envelope can always be opened, even if the phone is lost. Anyone who has the sheet and is in the household can open your envelope.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Sign in on the new phone with your email, and the handbook is back. Open your envelope with the printed key: scan the QR code on the sheet, or type the letters. Under Settings › Account you can tap "Sign out the other phones", so the old phone loses access. If you have neither the phone nor the sheet, nobody can open the envelope again, not even us. Then you have to remove it and make a new one.

Why do I have to confirm a new phone?

When someone in the household signs in on a new phone, it must be confirmed before it can open the envelopes. The phone shows a 6-digit code under Settings › Account. Check that it is the same code before you tap "Confirm the phone". Confirming doesn't give access by itself: access follows what you chose for the person.

Talk

What can Talk do?

Under the Talk tab you can ask about the handbook in your own words, for example "How do I turn off the water?". The answer comes from what you have written yourselves, and it shows where it comes from. Talk can also help you write the handbook, one question at a time. You can type or speak. The answers are made by artificial intelligence and can be wrong, so always check the handbook.

May Talk read our handbook?

The household decides. The household's owner or a partner can turn it on or off under Household, with the pencil by the household. It applies to everyone in the household, and Talk only reads what the person asking can see. When it is off, Talk can only answer from what you type.

What is sent when I use Talk?

The answers are made by Claude from Anthropic. What you type or say is only sent to make the answer. Anthropic keeps it briefly and doesn't train on it, and we don't keep the conversations. Codes from the sealed envelopes and pictures are never sent. If something in a message looks like a code, the app stops it before it is sent.

What is Scan a letter?

Take a picture of a letter, for example an insurance policy or a bill. The text is read on the phone, and CPR, account and card numbers are removed before anything is shown or sent. You get a suggestion for where it belongs in the handbook, and you check it before you save. The picture is never sent. Scan a letter is next to the search on the Overview if you are the owner or a partner.

Why can't I write more in Talk today?

Each person has a number of Talk messages a day. The app shows how many are left. When they are used, try again tomorrow. The rest of the app works as usual.

Reminders

How do the reminders work?

If you want, the app suggests one small thing to write down, at most once a week and in the morning. It can also remind you to check that what is written is still right. You choose how often under Settings › Reminders, and you can turn them off completely.

Can the app remind us about the car's service or changing the tyres?

Yes. Open the entry and tap "Add a reminder". Choose once, every year, twice a year or every other year. The reminder comes at 10 in the morning and can go to the whole household or to one person. When one person taps "Done", it counts for everyone.

Privacy and security

Where is the handbook kept, and who can see it?

The handbook is kept on your phones and on our own server in Denmark. Only the people you have invited can see it, and only the topics they have been given. We show no ads and never sell data. The handbook is protected by access rules, so we who run the server could technically read it, but we don't. The codes in the sealed envelopes we cannot read. Read more in the privacy policy.

Can I lock the app?

Yes. Under Settings you can choose to lock the app with fingerprint, face or the phone's code. That is a good idea if others borrow your phone. The phone itself must have a screen lock.

How do I delete my account?

In the app under Settings › Account › Delete my account. Your account, your phones and your sealed envelope are deleted for good. If you are alone in the household, the whole handbook is deleted. If others are in it, they keep it. You can also read how to delete your account, or write to us.

How do I contact you?

Write to handover@rainybit.dk, or use "Write to us" under Settings in the app.

iPhone

Is Handover available for iPhone?

Not yet. Handover is only for Android for now. A guest page can be opened on any phone, iPhone too, in the browser. If you would like to hear when the app comes to iPhone, tap "On iPhone? Let us know" on the front page.
